The 'Pass Plus' course

The Pass Plus course is made up of 6 different modules:

  • Town driving
  • All-weather driving
  • Out of town and rural roads
  • Night driving
  • Dual carriageways
  • Motorways

You must receive a minimum of one hours teaching per module, however where there is no practical elements available (e.g. for night driving module if your lessons are in the morning) you will receive a theory session.

Town driving

  • Observation, judgement & awareness
  • Eye Contact
  • Consideration for vulnerable road users
  • Being cautious – but not over-cautious
  • Keeping space around your car
  • Multi-lane junctions
  • Unusual roundabouts
  • Trams and bus, cycle and taxi lanes
  • Under- and over-passes

All-weather driving

  • Rain
  • Sleet, snow & ice
  • Mist & fog
  • Bright sunshine
  • Make sure you can see & be seen
  • Decide what speed to drive at
  • Apply the rules in practice
  • The causes of skidding
  • Prevention of skids
  • Correcting slow speed skids
  • Breaking on poor surfaces
  • Aquaplaning

Out of town and rural road

  • The main differences from town driving
  • Observing the road ahead
  • Making progress safely
  • Bends, hills, uneven roads & dead ground
  • Keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead
  • Safe overtaking
  • Consideration for pedestrians on roads with no pavements
  • Horse riders
  • Sharp bends
  • Use of the horn
  • Farm entrances & buildings
  • Slow moving vehicles
  • Livestock & wild animals
  • Mud & other debris on the road
  • Use of passing places

Night driving

  • The importance of headlights
  • Adjusting to the dark
  • Driving at dusk & dawn
  • Judging speed & distance
  • The correct use of lights & cleanliness of lights
  • Dazzle
  • Anticipation & awareness of pedestrians, cyclists etc.
  • Parking

Dual Carriageways

  • Effective observations (use of all mirrors, blind spots, scanning the near, middle and far distance)
  • Judgement and planning (safe distances and the two-second rule)
  • Joining and leaving dual carriageways – use of slip roads
  • Overtaking and lane discipline
  • Correct use of speed

Motorways

  • Overtaking and lane discipline
  • Courtesy to other road users
  • Motorway fatigue
  • Breakdown procedures
  • Use of lights, including hazard warning lights
  • Debris on the carriageway
  • Crosswinds
  • Planning journeys in advance
  • Joining & leaving motorways
  • Safe speeds in different circumstances
  • Effective observation (use of all mirrors, blind spots, scanning the near, middle and far distance)
  • Signs, signals & markings

There is no test for this course, you are assessed purely on your ability by your instructor, and given a grade for each module.

This course will enable you to receive a discount on your insurance, with certain insurance companies. You will receive the current list of companies offering a discount from your instructor upon passing the course.
